AI Hook Generators Compared: 5 Tools, the Same 10 Scripts, Honest Results
Every AI hook generator demos beautifully on its own landing page. So we ran a harder test: the same ten scripts through five popular tools, a mix of TikTok product pitches, YouTube explainers and LinkedIn posts, then scored the hooks blind on specificity, curiosity gap and platform fit. The short version: generic chatbots write generic hooks, dedicated tools are only as good as their formula library, and the first line you publish should never be the first line any tool gives you.
For the theory of why the opening line decides your retention curve, read The First 3 Seconds first; this piece is purely about the tools.
The test
Ten source scripts, five tools, three generated hooks per script per tool, 150 hooks total. Each hook scored 1 to 5 on three axes: specificity (does it name a number, an object, a mistake), curiosity gap (does it open a loop a viewer needs closed) and platform fit (does it sound native to the target feed). Scoring was done from a shuffled spreadsheet, tool names hidden.
What we tested
| Tool | Type | Cost tested at | Avg score /15 | Standout trait |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (general chatbot) | Prompt it yourself | Free tier | 8.1 | Ceiling as high as your prompt |
| Copy.ai hook templates | Marketing suite | Free tier | 8.9 | Fast batch variations |
| Jasper | Marketing suite | Trial | 9.2 | Brand-voice consistency |
| VidIQ hook tools | YouTube suite | Free tier | 9.0 | Title and hook pairing |
| BestHookAI generator | Dedicated, formula-based | Free | 9.6 | 27 named formulas, fill-in structure |
Scores cluster tighter than the marketing wars suggest, and that is the honest finding: no tool writes a great hook unattended. The gap between the best and worst tool (1.5 points) was smaller than the gap between raw output and output after one human edit pass (2.4 points on a subsample we rescored).
Where each tool wins
ChatGPT is unbeatable when you feed it a real formula and a real detail from your script. Left to a lazy prompt like “write a hook about productivity,” it produces the exact average of the internet: “Want to be more productive?” That is a score-3 hook on its best day.
Copy.ai and Jasper earn their place in teams that already pay for them: batch generation, tone controls, brand voice. For a solo creator who only needs hooks, a subscription is a lot of money for a feature you can replicate with formulas.
VidIQ thinks in YouTube packaging: hook, title and thumbnail text as one unit, which is the correct frame for that platform. Its hooks skew clickbaity for LinkedIn; know your feed.
Ours scored highest in this test, and the reason is boring: it does not improvise. It forces every hook through one of 27 named formulas (contrarian claim, receipt flash, cost confession, and so on) with fill-in slots for your specifics. Structure beats vibes. It is also free with no signup, which is the entire pitch. You can pressure-test the formulas yourself in the 27 formulas guide.
The pattern behind good AI hooks, whatever tool you use
- Feed it one concrete detail. A number, a mistake, an object on the desk. Hooks fail on abstraction, and AI defaults to abstraction.
- Ask for ten, keep one, rewrite it. Generation is for options, not answers. The human pass adds the specificity a model cannot know.
- Name the formula. “Write this as a cost confession” outperforms “write a viral hook” in every tool we tested.
- Read it aloud. If the first five words could open a corporate webinar, delete them.
FAQ
Are AI-generated hooks against platform rules?
No. Platforms penalize misleading content, not AI assistance. The risk is a hook that promises what the video does not deliver; that kills retention and the algorithm notices.
Should the hook be written before or after the script?
Both work, but writing ten hooks first often sharpens the script: if no honest hook makes the idea interesting, the idea needs work, not the hook.
Why did a free tool outscore paid suites in your test?
Narrow scope. A formula-constrained generator cannot wander into generic territory. The paid suites win on everything around the hook: briefs, brand voice, team workflow.
How many hooks should I test per video?
On platforms with retention analytics, ship one and read the curve. If your first-3-second drop-off exceeds roughly a third, re-cut the opening before blaming the content.
